BENTEKE BIDDING WAR COMMENCES
The rumours surrounding the future of Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke heightened last night as the giant striker submitted a transfer request.
While Tottenham remain strongly linked to the player it emerges that Jose Mourinho fancies adding to the Belgian collection at Chelsea who, according to the Daily Telegraph, are set to make a bid of around £20m.
Paul Lambert looks resigned to losing the hitman who notched 23 goals for Villa last season but can now expect to get closer to £30m with a bidding war imminent.
Indeed, with the likes of Loic Remy and Jermaine Defoe themselves rumoured to be available from £6m, finding a decent replacement and money to re-invest into the squad doesn’t make the situation all too bad for the Villa boss.
ARSENAL SET TO MISS OUT AGAIN?
With the prospective transfer of Gonzalo Higuain still shrouded in uncertainty as news suggests Real Madrid might fancy keeping hold of the Argentinean, Arsene Wenger looks set to be served a double blow.
Encouraged by Arsenal’s initial £30m bid for Luis Suarez that was swiftly rejected by Liverpool, the Daily Mirror believe Chelsea are set to knock on the Anfield gates a little louder with a £40m bid of their own.
With Arsene Wenger finally prepared to spend big money, what does it mean to have both his bold transfer moves rebuked? Should Arsenal move away from bidding for established stars and instead follow Chelsea’s strategy of spending big on youngsters destined to make a name for themselves?
MOYES DETERMINED TO BE REUNITED WITH BAINES
Manchester United look set to return with an improved offer for Everton left-back Leighton Baines. The Guardian tips David Moyes to secure the services of the England international with a new bid after the Toffee’s deemed the initial £12m fee as inadequate.
Also, despite the Scots’ declaration to keep Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford, the air doesn’t seem to have cleared up totally surrounding the strikers future. With figures of £30-40m quoted for the likes of Benteke and Suarez alone, it sounds bizarre why the Rooney rumours seem to have him valued at only around £25m.
