Birmingham's goal scorer Kerys Harrop in action
Birmingham City’s impressive start to the WSL continued this weekend as they recorded a third consecutive league win at home to Lincoln. After two successive 4-0 victories, Blues were made to work a lot harder for the points against the Lady Imps on Sunday.
After an even game, Kerys Harrop’s 73rd minute header won it for the home side and kept Birmingham’s exceptional start going.
Elsewhere in the league this weekend, Bristol Academy registered their first point of the campaign thanks to Grace McCatty’s late leveller against Liverpool. Robbie Johnson’s Reds were looking for revenge over the side that had defeated them in last week’s F.A Cup semi-final, and were on course after Michelle Evans’ strike put them ahead on the stroke of half time.
However, playing in front of a crowd of over 700 at their first home game of the season, Bristol eventually made their considerable pressure count in stoppage time when McCatty’s deflected effort secured a deserved draw.
Doncaster Belles’ first match at the Keepmoat Stadium didn’t go to plan, as they were thrashed 4-1 by Chelsea. The Belles did take the lead through ex-England midfielder Vicky Exley, but goals from Danielle Buet, Danni Bird, Ashlee Hincks and Emma Plewa gave Chelsea their first maximum haul of the season.
Absent from league action this weekend were Arsenal, who booked their place in the F.A Cup final with a convincing victory over Barnet. An Ellen Whitehat-trick, and further goals from Kim Little and Rachel Yankey helped the Gunners ease past the Premier League side and set up a final against Bristol Academy in May.
