Blues March On As Merseyside Misery Continues

Birmingham City goalscorer Sally Stanton in action against Everton

Birmingham City completed an impressive double of away victories to keep their astonishing WSL start going. After defeating champions Arsenal, Blues beat Everton 2-0 thanks to a long-range Kerys Harrop strike and Sally Stanton’s deflected header.

Having overcome their two toughest looking fixtures with flying colours, it is difficult to see who can stop Birmingham’s charge towards the title. For Everton, a first defeat after three draws was far from the start that many were expecting from Mo Marley’s side, and they sit in a lowly sixth position.

Even worse off than the Toffees are their Merseyside neighbours Liverpool, whose winless run now stretches to five games after they were beaten at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium. Aine O’Gorman will claim the night’s solitary goal, but Reds’ goalkeeper Andrea Worrall should have done much better with the cross which she dropped into her own net.

After watching that error, and then seeing striker Ruesha Littlejohn miss a second half penalty for the visitors, Liverpool boss Robbie Johnson was left to rue yet more individual mistakes, which have cost his side dear so far this campaign.

For Doncaster, it was a first win at their Keepmoat home and a satisfactory way to bounce back after their 4-1 defeat at the hands of Chelsea in their last home game.

Arsenal got back to winning ways after losing to Birmingham City as they beat Lincoln 2-0 at Ashby Avenue. A dominant Gunners performance was rewarded by goals from Jordan Nobbs and Ellen White. The result moves Arsenal back up to second and leaves Lincoln just one place above Liverpool, whom they meet on Sunday with both sides looking to record their first win.

In the night’s other game, Bristol Academy and Chelsea played out a goalless draw at the Stoke Gifford stadium. Bristol should have won the game but Helen Bleazard blasted a penalty kick wide in the second half, however, Chelsea came within inches of a third successive away win in stoppage time when Drew Spence’s effort cannoned off the crossbar.
