Bundesliga Week 11 Review: Bayern Munich Go Four Clear With Four Goals

'Super' Mario now has 12 goals in 11 games

Bundesliga Week 11 saw Bayern get back on track and add another point to their lead at the top as Dortmund faltered. Schalke took advantage to go second.

Bayern Munich 4-0 Nürnburg

Losing to Hannover seems like it was just a one game blip for Bayern (two if you include the draw with Napoli in the Champions League), as they were a class above Nürnburg in this one. The leaders put this one to bed by half-time with the game already 3-0 by then thanks to goals from Bastian Schweinsteiger and Franck Ribery after Mario Gomez had got his eleventh of the season to open the scoring.

Gomez made it number twelve with a little over twenty minutes left to add insult to injury and send a marker out that they are ready to make up for that Napoli draw on Wednesday too.

Borussia Mӧnchengladbach 2-1 Hannover

Hannover failed to capitalise on last weeks win against Bayern by losing in Mӧnchengladbach, who leapfrogged them in the process. The chasing pack seems to be doing that this year, beating each other and allowing Munich some breathing space.

Marco Reus regained his marksmanship skills in this one as his two goals got the hosts back on track, opening the scoring after 21 minutes. Emmanuel ‘Mad Pog’ Pogatetz did level for Hannover minutes later but when Reus got his second just after the break, there was no secondary repost from Hannover.

Stuttgart 1-1 Borussia Dortmund

This was another game where two potential contenders tripped each other up. Stuttgart had appeared to be throwing their hat into the ring as potential contenders when German international defender, Serdar Tasci gave the home side a first-half lead. However, in stoppage time, Lukasz Piszczek fired a leveller to go into the break all square. It set up the second half perfectly, but it dissolved into a drab affair, meaning both sides lose ground.

Schalke 3-1 Hoffenheim

It was Schalke that took advantage of the drab second-half in Stuttgart to jump up into second. Well, really it was Klaas-Jan Huntelaar that took advantage and carried Schalke on his back to do so with a second-half brace. Vedad Ibisevic had cancelled out Raul’s first-half opener on the hour mark before the Dutchman took matters into his own hands. The first came from the spot after he missed an even better chance minutes before and he then made it 3-1 just three minutes later.

Mainz 1-3 Werder Bremen

Claudio Pizarro won three Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich, sandwiched in between his two spells at Bremen. However, the Peruvian has never come close to the crown with Werder. He seems desperate; aged 33, to give the club that kick started his European career a serious title challenge with him in tow.

He ensured that the visitors went in level after Niko Bungert had given struggling Mainz a shock lead. That equaliser was capitalised on by Aaron Hunt inside the first minute of the second half before Sebastian Prӧdl put the game beyond doubt.

Hamburg 1-1 Kaiserslautern

It may not be a win for Hamburg but they are out of the bottom two with this hard earned point. It was a struggle for the hosts from the moment Slobodan Rajkovic got himself sent-off after 22 minutes. Things looked desperate for the home side when Pierre de Wit gave Kaiserslautern the lead just before half-time. This Hamburg side is now showing the sort of battling qualities that keep a side up though and Paolo Guerrero found an equaliser to give Hamburg a crucial point.

Kӧln 3-0 Augsburg

It is Augsburg that has replaced Hamburg in the bottom two as the newly promoted side could not live with Lukas Podolski. His two first-half goals, the second coming from the spot after Christian Clemens was fouled put this game to bed. Things are now so bad that the third came from Slawomir Peszko, the midfielder was signed for his goal scoring ability in January, netting his first goal for the club.

Freiburg 0-1 Bayer Leverkusen

Things look bad for Freiburg. When Leverkusen play as badly as this for 88 minutes after Michael Ballack had given them an early lead and Papiss Demba Cisse still is unable to score, trouble is on the horizon. The home side are now marooned at the bottom. Expect Cisse to leave in January and Freiburg to be in the second tier come August.

Wolfsburg 2-3 Hertha Berlin

This was one of the games of the week. So why is it last? Purely because both teams look set for dull mid-table campaigns, that is of great credit to newly promoted Hertha Berlin who move up to tenth with this win.

This game opened up on the half hour as, in a 10 minute spell, Raffael’s opener was cancelled out by Mario Mandzukic before Levan Kobiashvilli scored from the spot giving the lead back to the visitors. Marcel Schafer thought he had grabbed a late equaliser with just six minutes left but it took less than 60 seconds for Pierre-Michel Lasogga to win the game for Hertha.
