Serie A Round-Up Week 27: Udinese Hammer Palermo While Di Vaio Nails Juventus

Francesco Totti

Francesco Totti's penalty opened the scoring for Roma but they eventually drew 2-2

Plenty of goals in Serie A this week as Roma continued life without Claudio Ranieri by getting pegged back at home, Juventus succumbed to a brace from an Old Lady alumnus and Palermo were on the end of a 7-0 shellacking at the hands of Udinese.

ROMA 2 – 2 PARMA

After Wednesday night’s smash and grab 1-0 victory at Bologna, Roma’s caretaker boss Vincenzo Montella was reminded that Serie A is still an unforgiving league after losing a 2-0 lead against Parma.

It was Daniele De Rossi who gave la Maggica the points on Wednesday but this time it was the turn of the capital’s other idol, Francesco Totti, to give Roma the lead from the penalty spot after 19 minutes. The home side’s lead was doubled when centre-back Juan scored a scrappy second on 36 minutes.

However, Parma earned parity in a five minute second half spell from 74 to 79 minutes, inspired by a brace from striker Amauri.

The Brazilian first dragged his side into contention with a stunning first time back-heel from 12 yards. His second was at the opposite end of the spectrum, poking home as the ball bobbled around the box to earn Parma a draw.

PALERMO 0 – 7 UDINESE

Alexis Sanchez and Antonio Di Natale went to town on Palermo in a crushing 7-0 defeat.

The away side were 5-0 up by half-time, with Di Natale helping himself to a brace and Sanchez a hat-trick. Palermo’s defence were torn apart with frightening ease, particularly for Sanchez’s second, as he ran half the length of the pitch to round the goalkeeper and slot home.

The second half was tame in comparison, Sanchez grabbing his fourth just after half-time before Di Natale left Palermo to endure a humiliating final half an hour when he wrapped things up on 61 minutes.

CAGLIARI 1 – 0 LAZIO

Lazio took the pressure off the top three by slipping up away at Cagliari.

A 40th minute strike by Robert Acquafresca was enough to take the points, although the goal may be awarded to Andre Dias after he clumsily bumped the forward’s shot into the net.

The visitors were otherwise limited to long range efforts that rarely troubled Michael Agazzi in the Cagliari goal.

CATANIA 2 – 1 GENOA

Catania did themselves a favour in their fight to stay up by coming from behind to win against Genoa.

Antonio Floro Flores had opened the score for the Genovese on 18 minutes with a tidy finish from 6 yards.

That was before Catania coach Diego Simeone earned his euros at half-time, with Argentine compatriot Maxi Lopez levelling things on 51 minutes. Just three minutes later, another Argentine, Gonzalo Bergessio, sealed the points with a deflected strike from inside the area to move Catania four points from the drop zone.

BARI 1 – 1 FIORENTINA

Bari may be doomed, but they showed admirable grit in this game to grab a late point.

Alberto Gilardino did what he does to open the scoring for la Viola, with an assassin’s finish from a tight angle on 21 minutes.

That was before Bari rearranged the deckchairs on the Titanic through Abdelkader Ghezzal’s sumptuous outside of the right foot curler.

BRESCIA 2 – 2 LECCE

Yet more goals in this entertaining encounter (who says Serie A isn’t exciting?) as Brescia took Roma’s lead by fudging a two goal advantage.

Andrea Caracciolo’s thumping header gave Brescia a start on 17 minutes. Just two minutes later he was joined on the scoresheet by Davide Zoboli, who stooped to head in from a corner.

But Lecce hauled themselves out of the mire, with Daniele Corvia’s nutmeg finish on 31 minutes giving them hope.

Despite further chances at both ends, it took Lecce until the 70th minute to seal a point when Bruno Munari danced through to deny Brescia.

CESENA 1- 0 CHIEVO

In a week overflowing with goals, Cesena and Chievo looked like it would be the bad apple until a stoppage-time penalty settled it.

Luis Jimenez tucked the spot-kick away after a clumsy foul on Erjon Bogdani from a corner.

The win gives Cesena a sporting chance of survival, leaving them three points adrift of Lecce and Parma.

JUVENTUS 0 – 2 BOLOGNA (SATURDAY)

The Old Lady stuttered once more – and it was one of their own that did the damage.

Marco Di Vaio’s second half brace against his old club did for Juve and compounded their mediocre campaign. His first, on 49 minutes, was simple enough. The veteran raced on to a lobbed through ball to poke past Marco Storari.

The win was confirmed when Di Vaio found room in the home penalty area to squeeze a shot inside the near post after 65 minutes.
