Champions League Final Player Profiles: Manchester United

It may not have been United’s most spectacular ever season, but Sir Alex Ferguson’s men could complete a historic double if they beat Barcelona at Wembley tomorrow night. James Toseland looks at the players who are vying for a place in Old Trafford history.

Edwin van der Sar: This will be the heroic goalkeeper’s last ever game for the Premier League Champions. Since his arrival in 2005 he turned the twilight of his career into a period of unparalleled success with four Premier League titles and a Champions League among his honours with the Red Devils. Bowing out with a European title would cap a phenomenal career.

Fabio Da Silva: This young Brazilian has beaten his twin brother to become a first team regular at Old Trafford. He is quick and brave and a strong option in an age when good right-backs are hard to come by. He can be a bit rash and Barcelona may use that against him and draw fouls.

Rio Ferdinand: The former England captain will be keen to make up for lost time after a season plagued by injury. He described himself as a ‘kid at xmas’ on Twitter yesterday and no doubt he will be up for the game. One of the most intelligent and gifted defenders, his ability could be the key to stopping Barcelona.

Key man: Nemanja Vidic: The United captain fits the bill as the classic strong defender. He has been a contender for player of the season in the last three years for his reading of the game, strength in the air and hard tackling. Vidic also has the canny ability to score important goals and has every chance of being the difference at Wembley. At the other end, he will have to be careful not to react to Barcelona’s play-acting.

Patrice Evra: The French left back rivals Ashley Cole as the best in the Premier League and completes a strong Manchester United defence. He finds the balance of knowing when to bomb forward, making and score goals, and hanging back to defend. One suspects that he will spend more time in his own half to combat the threat of Lionel Messi.

Ji Sung Park: The South Korean hero has been a fringe player at Manchester United but Sir Alex Ferguson has a tendency to play him in the big games for his work rate and a knack for important goals. He played in the defeat to Barca in Rome two years ago and has gone on record saying he is keen for revenge.

Michael Carrick: The midfield man has said he has a point to prove ahead of Saturday’s game and will be keen to show the world he can pass the ball as well as his opponents. If he is on his game he could make the difference but has been known to let big matches pass him by.

Ryan Giggs: The evergreen Manchester United hero has been in the news for the wrong reasons this week but this game is his chance to remind fans why he has won 12 Premier League titles. Giggs has scored and made goals in United’s route to the final and this will be one of his biggest tests in proving his professionalism.

Key man: Nani: Nani’s third season with United has proved his most successful with nine goals and 14 assists in the league. He was a nominee for player of the year for his service to the front men and this will be his chance to prove his name on the big stage.

Wayne Rooney: After a topsy turvy season where he was close to leaving Old Trafford, Rooney has ended the year on a high. He got the goal that sealed the Premier League title but his link-up play with Hernandez has been pivotal.

Key man: Javier Hernandez: At £6million, Chicharito has been the bargain of the season. He is a classic poaching striker and puts away nearly every chance presented to him. Hernandez has thrived as United’s main man this season and has one more game to cap an explosive arrival into European football.

Antonio Valencia: If Nani is having an off day on the right for United, Sir Alex Ferguson can throw on this right winger who has the pace and power to stretch Barcelona and provide the service for Rooney and Hernandez.

Paul Scholes: One of United’s greatest ever players is coming to the end of his career and all evidence suggests that Scholes will announce his retirement after this game. He may not have the fitness to command a starting place and cope with Barca’s quick passing game but could still make a difference from the bench.

Dimitar Berbatov: If Rooney and Hernandez are not firing, what better option to get that important goal than the Premier League’s joint top scorer? Berbatov has been considered part of United’s second string this year but his class in front of goal is devastating.
